SpaceX’s Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk gave a preview of the California-based company’s futuristic new spacesuit in an Instagram post. The suit could be worn by the first NASA astronauts to ride to space on SpaceX’s upcoming Dragon cargo capsule, with flights scheduled as early as next year.
In the image, the white suit appears lighter weight than the bulky spacesuits worn by NASA astronauts and is interspersed with gray stitched seams and accented with an American flag patch on the shoulder.
“First picture of SpaceX spacesuit. More in days to follow,” Musk said. “Worth noting that this actually works (not a mockup). Already tested to double vacuum pressure. Was incredibly hard to balance aesthetics and function. Easy to do either separately,” he added.
