The United States and Russia have reached a deal to create a new space station called Deep Space Gateway located in the Moon’s orbit, head of Russia’s Roscosmos space agency Igor Komarov (pictured) stated on Wednesday.
“We agreed that we will jointly participate in the project to create a new international lunar orbital station Deep Space Gateway. At the first stage we will construct an orbital part with the further goal of implementing the fulfilled technologies on the Moon, and later on Mars,” Komarov said at the International Astronautical Congress in Australia.
The lunar station will be built with the support of BRICS nations such as China and India, while the completion of the first modules are expected between 2024 and 2026. Komarov added that the project will create new opportunities for the Russian space industry, but it will also set standards for similar projects in the future.
