Social media platform Instagram developed an alternative version of its app dubbed Instagram Lite, which appeared on Google Play Store on Thursday without an earlier announcement from the company, Tech Crunch reported. The move follows the releases of Facebook Lite in 2015 and Messenger Lite in April.
Instagram Lite is much smaller than the main app, amounting to only 573 kilobytes, and its aimed at mobile users in parts of the world where older smartphone devices are used. “We are testing a new version of Instagram for Android that takes up less space on your device, uses less data, and starts faster,” a spokesperson for the photo and video sharing network told Tech Crunch.
Last week, Instagram said it surpassed one billion active users, announcing its own “vertical video’ streaming service IGTV, expected to challenge YouTube’s dominance in the video-sharing niche.
