The co-founder of Alphabet Inc. Sergey Brin wrote about the way his company utilizes Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the latest annual Founders’ Letter. He also took the opportunity to address the risks that come with AI and responsibilities it requires, calling it the “ethical revolution.”
“Such powerful tools also bring with them new questions and responsibilities… Most notably, safety spans a wide range of concerns from the fears of sci-fi style sentience to the more near-term questions such as validating the performance of self-driving cars,” Brin wrote.
He mentioned that Alphabet currently uses AI for a wide range of purposes, including helping doctors diagnose diseases, discovering new planetary systems, enabling Waymo cars to recognize and distinguish objects safely and improving the quality of translation through Google Translate, among other things. However, earlier in the month, more than 3,000 Google’s employees signed a petition against the collaboration with Pentagon on improving the precision of drones.
