The CEO of Fidelity International, one of the world’s largest asset managers, said the company is taking a long look at cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin and ethereum.
Abighail Johnson, who was speaking at Consensus, a bitcoin-themed conference in New York, said that Fidelity had made a number of venture investments in bitcoin-related businesses and that it is exploring applications of blockchain technologies alongside several leading universities. The company had also set up a small mining operation inside the asset management business for proprietary trading purposes and, as Johnson says, it is “making a lot of money.”
While Fidelity started out by experimenting with cryptocurrencies internally, it is now bringing some of the features to its broad customer base. Most prominently, its cryptocurrency balances have finally become visible on the company’s website for customers that have an account with trading and storage services provider Coinbase.
Abighail is herself a huge proponent and miner of cryptocurrency and one of the prominent executives who seem to believe that bitcoin is more than just a fad.
