BMW customers will soon be able to use their smartphones to lock and unlock their cars. The carmaker is presenting the BMW Digital Key feature, which will be available from mid-2018, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week. The German company will allow drivers to share the digital key with five other people, but will initially work only with Samsung phones.
BMW is also showcasing a self-driving i3 electric car at the event, which the drivers will be able to summon using their smartphones. Users will also have the possibility to control the vehicle’s entertainment system and horn, while the car will park itself after the customer has exited and locked it. However, the autonomous vehicle will be available for purchase a few years from now.
