Didi to start autonomous driving tests in California

Didi Chuxing, the ride-hailing heavyweight which has managed to rein in Uber’s expansion in China, received the go-ahead from California Department of Motor Vehicles to test its driverless cars. The company became the 53rd such operator in the state, lining up behind the likes of Lyft, Baidu and Alphabet’s Waymo, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

The news marks the technology giant’s launch of the trials in the United States, taking the project to the public space after research was conducted in closed facilities since the opening last year of an artificial intelligence unit in Mountain View, California.

The news outlet noted it has learned from sources that Didi may be preparing an initial public offering and possibly planning to organize the stock market debut even before the end of 2018.
